Chitwan National Park (932 sq km)

Chitwan National ParkChitwan National Park, considered to be nepal's third most popular tourist attraction after trekking and the Kathmandu valley was established in 1973 as the first national park of Nepal. It was declared World Heritage Site in 1984 helping it to gain world recognition on a broader level. Lying at the feet of himalayas it is home to endangered wild animals, threatened mammals, and over 450 species of birds.


It has played a great role in protecting the endangered one-horned rhinoceros , royal
bengal tiger and gharial crocodile. Some interesting activities to do in this park include Jungle safari on elephant, jungle walk, canoe ride, jeep drive, and birdwatching. There are resort hotels & lodges inside the park and budzet hotels nearby.


It takes about 20 minutes by air to get there from kathmandu and by road about three and a half hours of bus ride. You can also raft down the Trishuli River from kathmandu or Seti River from Pokhara to get there. Park Facilities include display center, library, visitor center and view tower.

Bardiya National Park ( 968 sq km )

Bardiya National ParkThe Bardia National Park is the largest and the most undisturbed protected area in the Terai and is home to the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger and Nepal's famous one-horned rhinoceros. The national park located in the far western district of Bardiya, is bordered by River Karnali in the west, the Churia range in the north, while river Babai flows through the park. The varied geographical factors together with the thick cover of Sal, savannah forests and grasslands render this region ideal as wild animal habitat.

This park hosts 30 different mammals, more than 250 species of birds, and several varieties of reptiles and water animals. Some of the other animals found here are elephant, swamp deer, blackbuck, gharial crocodile and marsh mugger crocodile. The exotic Gangetic Dolphin is also sometimes seen in River Karnali. Birds include endangered varieties of Bengal Florican, lesser Florican, silver Florican, silver-eared mesia and sarus crane. The park offers the rare opprtunity of fishing at the River Karnali and River Babai.  

Activities in this park include Jungle safari on elephant, jungle walk, boat ride, jeep drive, and birdwatching.  You can get to this park after three hours of jeep ride from Nepalgunj. If you prefer to fly it's only an hour and ten minutes from Kathmandu. You could pick a jungle lodge among many for accomodation.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (175 sq km)

Koshi Tappu Wildlife ReserveKoshi Tapu Wildlife Reserve is situated in the embankments of the Sapta Koshi River system. This reserve is unique for its 100 or so surviving wild water buffaloes. Other mammals are the Hog Deer, Wild Boar, Spotted and the Nilga. The species of Birds total 280 here including 20 of ducks, many storks, egrets, herons and the endangered swamp partridges and Bengal floricans for the reason of it being the resting place for migrating Birds. Endangered Gharial Crocodiles and Gangetic dolphins have also been sighted in the Koshi River.

You can enjoy bird watching and view of himalayan peaks, and if you happen to come between October and March, you will see many migratory and resident birds at the barrage and on the main river channel.  Flying from Kathmandu to Biratnagar is the most convenient way to get here.
